A WIDENING CURRICULUM

Gradually the scope of elementary schooling after 1870 was widened. Especially among older children in large urban schools, the curriculum was expanded to include science, history, geography and grammar, as well as music, drill, drawing and craft training, or domestic subjects for the girls.

At Maud Clarke’s Staffordshire school around 1900, the girls did not learn history or geography, though cookery, dressmaking and domestic science were included as they were considered appropriate for their future adult life.

History and geography lessons were influenced by the upsurge in imperial pride, especially during the South African War of 1899–1902. Some schools even displayed wall maps showing the progress of the conflict, and many pupils shared in the enthusiasm. Walter Southgate at Mowlem Street School in Bethnal Green recalled that he and his friends played games like ‘English versus Boers’, and exuberantly celebrated major military successes.
